Selecting the right pump means mapping your duty point (flow + head) onto the pump's performance curve.
Step 1: Define the flow
Flow comes from the system demand: daily water use, cooling circulation, fire design flow. Remember: 1 m³/h ≈ 0.278 L/s.
Step 2: Calculate the head
Total HeadH = Hgeo + Hfriction + Hresidual
Static lift plus pipe friction plus residual outlet pressure.
Step 3: Pick the curve
Place the duty point near the Best Efficiency Point (BEP) to avoid off-design operation.
Engineer's tip
10% safety margin usually covers strainers, valves and pipe ageing.Common mistakes
- Sizing on flow alone, ignoring head
- Duty point at the curve tail — inefficient and cavitation-prone
- Ignoring medium density and viscosity
